Wilstone Reservoir, 3rd September 2017 - Blackcaps, more Blackcaps and a Hobby

From 05.30 to 11.30am
460’ nets
JT, EM, JSJ, SM, AM and Jen Day
Cool and breezy again.

The south-easterly breeze made it chilly in the orchard but fortunately it was warmer in the reed bed.
We did not use net ride 4 [80’] and had Blackcap tapes at net 8 and the corner of net 5 and 6 and Chiffchaff call at net 2.
This concentrated the birds resulting in a total of 173 . Two controls, a Blackcap and a Chiffchaff. Only 6 fat birds,5 Blackcaps and a Willow Warbler.
Very few Reed Warblers, could be because the reed bed dried earlier than usual this year. Another Hobby trapped in net ride 1, this one an adult female (see photos below), and a kingfisher caught for a third time this year.
To cap it all,our first colour-ringed Reed Bunting from Marsworth. Right leg, black over red in net ride 6.
