Herewith the Merrie month of May at Wilstone.
The first three CES visits were completed during May plus
one additional session.
Weather conditions were reasonable with virtually no rain
and the wind only troublesome on the 27th
The visit totals were very disappointing however, with each
session well below the average.
Last season began slowly but not as badly as this year.
In May 2017 we only ringed 14 juveniles, all residents apart
from a Blackcap.
This May we managed just four: three Long Tailed Tits and a
Chaffinch. So, no juvenile tits, Robins, Blackbirds or even Wrens.
By just comparing newly ringed birds from last May and
this, Blackcaps, Reed Warblers and Sedge Warblers are about equal in abundance. Only nine resident birds have been ringed in May
2018, one more than last year (4 sessions were also achieved in 2017).
We are definitely off to another slow start to a breeding
season.
On top of this the Cuckoo has disappeared!Johne
