Marsworth 18th June 2017 - CES 5

Site: Marsworth Reservoir
Ringers: LL, CK, CMS
Nets open: 04:50 - 10:50am
Weather: Calm, sunny, hot

Sunrise

It was an absolutely beautiful morning with the sun rising over the reedbed and cetti's warbler, reed bunting and blackcaps all singing loudly.

The first net round immediately after getting the nets up gave us 15 birds so we were off to a good start and it continued steadily after that. Most notable were the number of juvenile blackcaps (16) and wrens (12) but we have had fewer young chiffchaff  than we expect.

We caught our first juvenile cetti's warbler for the year and a 1J sedge warbler.
Breeding success so far looks to be good for most species, certainly compared to last year's failures. The total catch included 50 juveniles; in CES 5 last year we only had 15.

Juvenile cetti's warbler
We caught three new adult reed warblers but numbers are still low, we have only caught 22 individuals so far this year compared to 41 at the same point last year.
We also caught four new sedge warblers for the year, one sedge warbler had been ringed as a 3J in 2014. With these new birds our sedge warbler numbers are now up to normal.

A total of 81 birds is the highest session 5 since 2006 but our total so far this year is still below average (200 compared to an average of 226).

One of the young robins was just starting post-juvenile moult with a few red feathers growing in its breast and an adult male robin was starting full moult.
